Siemens Communications Group sailing a growth course in spite of problems
Pauly: “Most business activities are doing well; measures have been instituted for problem areas.”
Munich, Mar 8, 2005
The telecommunications arm of the Siemens Group is maintaining its ambitious growth targets. In spite of problems in its wireline business and in mobile handsets, Communications CEO Lothar Pauly offered up a positive assessment nearly six months after the establishment of the largest group in the Siemens organization. As the world’s third-largest telecommunication vendor with the broadest portfolio, Siemens enjoys clear competitive advantages. “Our market is seeing growth of up to eight percent. With products and solutions for consumers, enterprises and network operations, we are the clear technology leader and intend to translate that into corresponding market positions across all segments,” said Pauly. As an example, he cited Voice over IP technology – indicating that Siemens has the clear goal of becoming the number one in the market worldwide here – and the third generation of mobile technology. Overall, Pauly expressed his satisfaction with the development of the group: Six of its eight divisions are earning a good profit, with four of them posting impressive margins. Further potential for improvement is anticipated to come from synergy effects in connection with product platforms, where the group plans to save a total of 15 percent in development costs over the next three years. The necessary measures have been instituted at the group’s problem divisions, Fixed Networks and Mobile Phones.
Various options for a strategic realignment continue to be under review in connection with the mobile handset business. However Pauly stressed that regardless of these considerations, every effort is being made to get this business on track. Here, the focus is on cost reduction measures. A triple-digit million program is expected to swiftly produce results in improving this division’s cost position. In addition, Siemens intends to win back lost ground in the world market with a product offensive. A total of 15 new models are expected to debut this year, including W-CDMA phones.
With sales of ?18 billion in fiscal 2004, Siemens Communications is one of the three biggest players in the world telecommunications market. Thanks to its fundamental strategic alignment, the group is a pioneer in trendsetting technologies, with IP technology playing a predominant role in this connection. The entire industry has embraced this forward-looking technology: Following the enterprise sector, Voice over IP has now also become reality for residential customers and network operators. The market for personal consumers, who are using Voice over IP at home, is booming: It will be growing at an average of 80 percent annually through 2009 and users will need comfortable devices that make them independent of the computer. With the Gigaset S35 WLAN, Siemens is one of the first to offer a cordless phone for Voice over IP. Pauly: “With this product, we are bringing Voice over IP to the living room.”
Voice over IP is already firmly established in the Enterprise line of business. Its integration into IT systems and business processes is in full swing here – and as a technology leader, Siemens is playing a major role in this development. IT security solutions represent a further major issue for enterprises. “This market offers tremendous potential. It will be growing by an average of twelve percent a year through 2009,” said Pauly. The access control system for the AOL Arena soccer stadium in Hamburg is a good example of a powerful security solution for major public events. It offers enhanced safeguards against counterfeit tickets and shortens the waiting times for fans as they enter the stadium .
As the technology leader in W-CDMA, new access technologies and the convergence of wireless and wireline networks, Siemens is playing in the Big League in the telecommunication infrastructure sector. “Last year, we won the most new contracts for W-CDMA networks. And what’s more: We’re already a step further: We’re making W-CDMA nearly as fast as DSL. Thanks to our HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) data turbo, download rates of up to two megabits per second are possible – eight times faster than today,” said Pauly. This will enable W-CDMA providers to make highly efficient use of their frequencies and generate considerably higher data traffic revenues. Siemens will be bringing one of the first HSDPA data cards for laptops to market during the second half of the year.
